Home Based Care
In keeping with our basic strategy of caring for people
with HIV at home, the bulk of our staff are involved
in hands-on visits to people with HIV in their homes.
These visits are regular and help develop relationships
with families that last through the course of their
illness. Each visit includes an evaluation of the different
challenges the person suffering from HIV faces and seeks
practical ways to help the family overcome these. Counselling
and prayer are vital components to this, as we know
that it is the Lord Jesus who can change the seemingly
impossible situations our friends face. Our goal is
to link up each family with a local fellowship for on-going
care and nurture.
Home based care starts as soon as a person
is brought to us with an HIV infection - and often lasts
till their final days. Jeevan Sahara Kendra has experienced
the deaths of over 80 of our contacts over the past
4 years. Many of these dear friends have been provided
palliative care in their own homes, something that they
would other wise not have received. Though we are not
able to save each life - we do know that we have helped
many have meaningful and peaceful final days - and that
we will meet many in eternity!
Clinic Care
The home-based care is backed up by
an OPD clinic which caters to the needs of people with
HIV through specialist doctors. We ask our positive friends
to come for regular check-ups and prescribe inexpensive
medications when needed. For patients suffering from TB
we advocate for them with the municipal DOTS programme
to get free and supervised medication. Further, when patients
come to a stage where they need Anti-Retroviral Therapy
(ART), the consultant doctors prepare the suitable course
of medication and patient education to make the treatment
a success. When possible, our HIV-positive friends are
referred on to the government free-ART programme, and
we have seen over 30 of our contacts successfully taken
into the programme. Jeevan Sahara provides the supervision
for the TB and ART treatments through its home-visiting
programme.
